PHASES • Grades 1–3

Foundation Phase
(Grades 1–3)

Grades 1 to 3 form the Foundation Phase, where learners develop essential reading, writing and numeracy skills through structured yet hands-on learning. During these years, learners build confidence, independence and responsibility while strengthening listening, comprehension, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. This phase lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning and prepares learners for a smooth transition into the Intermediate Phase.

What happens in the Foundation Phase

The Foundation Phase focuses on strong routines, clear instruction, and meaningful practice. Learners work with language and numbers every day, strengthening reading accuracy, writing skills, number sense, and problem-solving strategies.

Classroom activities balance structure with practical learning. Learners engage in listening and speaking, guided reading, handwriting, phonics, basic calculations and mental maths, and tasks that grow curiosity and perseverance.
