Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6)

Welcome to the Intermediate Phase, where learners build important skills for learning and life. During this phase, learners develop stronger reading, writing, and problem-solving abilities. They are encouraged to think independently, ask questions, and work well with others. Learning becomes more detailed as learners explore different subjects and real-life topics. This phase helps prepare learners for the challenges of the Senior Phase and beyond.

Academics

Curriculum Focus

The Intermediate Phase develops strong literacy and numeracy foundations while expanding learners’ understanding of science, society and practical life skills. Work becomes more detailed and learners are guided to explain their thinking, apply knowledge and build consistent study habits.

Languages

Reading comprehension, vocabulary growth, writing structure, spelling, and oral communication. Learners practise understanding texts and expressing ideas clearly in speech and writing.

Mathematics

Number sense, operations, fractions, problem-solving, measurement, data handling, and geometry—taught with practice, explanation, and step-by-step reasoning.

Natural Sciences

Curiosity and investigation: simple experiments, systems, design thinking, and cause-and-effect. Learners learn to observe, record, and explain what they find.

Social Sciences

Geography and History concepts taught in an age-appropriate way—maps, places, environments, timelines, and how communities change over time.

Life Skills

Social and emotional development, physical education, arts and culture, and personal responsibility—supporting balanced growth alongside academics.

Study habits

Planning, homework routines, organising books, and preparing for tests. Learners learn how to practise correctly and how to ask for help early.

Assessment and Learning Structure

In the Intermediate Phase, learners work across a broader range of subjects and are guided to explain their reasoning, apply skills consistently and improve accuracy over time. Assessment supports steady progress through tasks, tests, projects and formal assessments where required.

Assessment includes

  • Class tasks and activities to practise key concepts.
  • Formal and informal tests to check understanding and accuracy.
  • Projects and investigations that develop research and presentation skills.
  • Clear feedback so learners know what to improve next.

Habits that matter in Grades 4–6

  • Planning and packing books correctly for each subject.
  • Homework routines that prioritise consistency over rushing.
  • Practising step-by-step methods in Mathematics and problem-solving.
  • Asking for help early to prevent gaps from growing.
Learning

Learning in Action

Learners build confidence by practising skills often, applying them in different contexts and engaging with content that connects to real-life topics. This helps them grow from guided learning into independent learning.

Next step

Preparing for the Senior Phase

By the end of Grade 6, learners are expected to manage their books and time more independently, study more consistently and apply skills across subjects. This preparation supports a smoother transition into Grade 7, where academic expectations and personal responsibility increase further.
